Reservoir characterization of unconventional reservoirs of the Cardium Formation along the western margin of the legacy Pembina oil pool in central Alberta is explored in this paper. These halo plays represent portions of conventional light oil pools that do not meet traditional petrophysical cutoffs and pay criteria.

This study attempted to define the difference in oil saturation index of different lithofacies within meter-scale cycles, characterize oil indicators of different lithofacies, and evaluate the effect of meter-scale cycles on oil storage capacity and oil saturation in the Wolfcamp A.

Historically, the exploration for oil and gas resources has focused on identifying structural and stratigraphic trams associated with conventional accumulations. This special issue aims at introducing a new exploration paradigm through case studies in the United States and Canada.

With the development of unconventional play opportunities, the Middle Member of the Bakken Formation, Williston Basin, is of renewed interest. Geochemical techniques are used to calculate mobile oil saturation to fully define this member as the key reservoir of the Bakken petroleum system.

William Herbert Hunt passed away on April 9, 2024, at the age of 95, in Dallas, Texas. Described as an “iconic wildcatter” by industry peers, Hunt was the founder of Dallas-based Petro-Hunt, one of the top 10 privately-owned oil producers in the United States. He was an emeritus member of AAPG’s Corporate Advisory Board up until his passing, a winner of AAPG’s Pioneer Award and an AAPG member since 1953.

A new type of buoyancy model can be used to understand the source of residual oil zones, both thick and thin, to help determine the likelihood that economically viable recoverable oil resides in transition zones of imbibition reservoirs. Application of a buoyancy and breech model will fill a void in reservoir characterization. It will help distinguish between TZs and ROZs, the first of which allows application of primary and secondary (waterflooding) oil recovery methods and the second of which requires more difficult CO2-enhanced oil recovery projects.

On a Saturday morning in February, AAPG renewed its professional commitment to K-12 teachers through its Educators’ Program, which had traditionally taken place during the annual convention in Houston. Led by AAPG members Nicole Villarreal, Jerry Kendall, Don Yurewic, and Marsha Bourque, this enriching professional development event focused on understanding the flow archives of Hurricane Harvey in Buffalo Bayou.

You might know that at the end of this month, our House of Delegates will meet to vote on a package of new Bylaws created under the “Reimagine” effort. If you listen to the reasons members do or don’t support the proposed Bylaws, there are of course legitimate pros and cons. But what emerges in many cases seems to be two different philosophical views about the changing energy landscape and how AAPG should react.

Abstracts from more than 50 papers addressing the geology of the area from the southern onshore of North America to the northern onshore of South America, including the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas Platform, Yucatán, Caribbean (Colombia, Venezuela), Grenada and Tobago basins and adjacent Atlantic. Integration will improve understanding and promote investigation of lesser-explored/debated areas, such as the Caribbean. Recent seismic and drilling discoveries from other offshore frontiers will help assessment of their hydrocarbon potential.
